The Borough of Poole is grateful for the support of Keyline Builders Merchants and their donation of materials through Marshall’s PLC.

Step aside Sudoku, roll over Rubik’s cube! Three of Poole’s schools have been undertaking a tough test of mental dexterity, team work and creativity. In the process they’ve designed and built a new path at Sandbanks.

Students from St. Edward’s School, Parkstone Grammar and Victoria Education Centre helped create 40m of block paved path between Sandbanks Car Park and the beach in the last week of June. They transformed a rough track into a wheelchair, pushchair and flip-flop friendly access experience, featuring their representations of sea life and sand castles.

Councillor Judy Butt, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Public Engagement and Participation, commented:

"Sandbanks Beach is one of Poole's most popular visitor attractions and it is wonderful that we can involve our local schoolchildren in this exciting project. This is a great opportunity to showcase the amazing artistic talents of our young people.”

All the blocks were donated by Keyline Builders’ Merchants through their suppliers Marshalls.

This project will be an important part of Poole's Blue Flag Award application for 2013. Sandbanks has held this award since 1987, longer than any other UK Beach. At least five environmental education activities must be undertaken each year to meet the criteria.

Other activities included the Sandbanks Family Funday in August, and - to come - production of a leaflet on the natural wealth of Sandbanks, and guided walks.

The main project work with schools is complete, and our building contractor is now creating a link from the new footpath to a tap with a seahorse path in keeping with the seaside theme.

With the money saved by having footpath blocks donated to us we hope to involve schools in brightening up the wall alongside the path next year.
